Completing the last 2.5-mile section of the Upper Charles Trail (UCT) from Holliston to the downtown Framingham train station will require the purchase of 85 acres of land from CSX in Framingham and Sherborn. Though a blighted area rarely used by CSX or even patrolled the tracks are often used by children, dog walkers, dirt bike riders, hunters, and hikers.
Acquiring this land for a rail trial will have immediate public safety benefits and much much more. It will a) unlock access to a reconnected Bay Circuit Trail and 500 acres of open space, b) provide direct access to commuter rail for communities to the south, c) make available a vital recreational outlet for one of the largest environmental justice populations in the state, and d) spur significant economic activity. Gaining control of this expansive open space will provide a rare opportunity to reconnect fragmented habitat, replant trees, and expand flood storage. Finally, The Upper Charles Rail Trail, once it is extended north by way of the Chris Walsh Trail to the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail and Mass Central Trail, will form a critical link in the statewide MassTrails Network and the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway from Maine to Florida.
Current Status: The MassTrails team considers the unfinished Upper Charles Trail to be one of its top rail trail priorities going forward and is working on a coordinated land acquisition strategy. The newly formed MetroWest Greenway Coalition will be briefing the local, state, and federal leadership and will be engaging the public to gain their input.
